We met Emily, founder of the lovely letterpress studio and business The Little Press at Wedding Upmarket (part of Perth Upmarket) as we were performing just next to her beautiful stall. If you’d ever been to any bridal fairs, you’d know how much everything shouts ‘wedding’ to you. But the reason why her little spot stood out for us was that it spelled Love so effortlessly. Her works had an ethereal quality about them, and her stall was like a lovely dandelion that stood out in a sea of lilies. It was perfect. By the start of our 2nd set of music, we saw her sneaking out of her stall to pick up our name card. That childlike gesture deeply moved me. The mutual appreciation for the art and music was perhaps the beginning of a new friendship.

Later at her 30th birthday celebration did we then heard her confession “i was just so obsessed with you guys and your music, it was so different’. But what made this so special for us was how her partner Rob secretly contacted us to perform a birthday surprise for her. Eventually, probably with the logistics that needed to be run, it no longer became a surprise. Still, everyone at the party including Emily seemed fittingly surprised when we arrived as (in Moonbeam’s words) “part of the birthday present”.The couples danced along to our acoustic unplugged swing set with our quirky lineup: the melodion (Melodica or pianica) and ukulele interweaving in line and percussive roles over classic tunes like “My baby just cares for me”, “Something Stupid” and the breezy sensuous “So Danco Samba”. It was an intimate dinner celebration with friends with cupcakes, beer, wine and close friends at her beautiful studio in West Perth that ended with the age-old important birthday song. Tears, love and laughter.
