Magical Woodlands Day Wedding of Dominic and Rebecca

Magical Woodlands Day Wedding of Dominic and Rebecca

Dominic and Rebecca held their magical woodlands wedding at Somerville Auditorium at UWA (University of Western Australia) just a couple of minutes from Perth city. We played for their day wedding, celebrating significant moments at their ceremony, and the aftermath bliss in a marquee reception set amidst these tall, beautiful pines. There was something nordic, something woodlands, but it’s not until you see their love, the way they lock eyes, friends and lovers, that you see the magic. Some weddings have that effect on you. So much went on months before that, and then, it’s over. And you wish you could relive the magical bits all over again.

Thank you so much for playing at our wedding. It set the perfect scene, all of our guests were raving about you.

Celebrant Andrew did a marvellous job keeping the ceremony slick. As the couple entered the ‘woods’, we played and sang a duet to that familiar classic Dream A Little Dream by Mama Cass. Down the path lovingly created by Kimberly from Ceremony Secrets, the sweethearts descended, and you could hear the crowd holding their breath from the tiny recoil sighs. So. Beautiful.

You were amazing. Thank you for making our day so magical.

We tinkled sweet instrumentals as the couple moved to signing. Celebrant Andrew Murfin declared them husband and wife, and we played a vibrant version of Etta James’ At Last as they walked back up, past all their loved ones, scattering pink petals and cheer. It was just a fantastic morning. Their friend, and wonderful emcee, Roy then ushered the guests for more photos brilliantly snapped by Brazil-born Isabelle Haubrich, who later commented that my Portuguese on Garota de Ipanema was ‘beautiful’! (Whew! What an honour!)

I loved every song; your voices; your great harmony; the amazing touch you’ve added to this awesome celebration of my dear friends. I hope to hear you again… one day…<3

We moved into the marquee playing more music indoors as the guests settled, speckling instrumentals amongst classic swing and bossa nova tunes such as ‘Come Fly with Me’, ‘Moonglow’, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ etc. But the highlight of the arvo must be their First Dance. The groom, Dominic who did the planning of music with me, had selected a delicious range of favourites, and decided on ‘It Had to Be You’ for their special dance. I must say i’m pretty speechless about their moment. Let’s just call it Perfect. The way they looked at each other and kissed like the world about them disappeared and there was just the 2 of them, I think i am again reminded why I love playing for weddings. Precious.

Knowing that music would be a vital part of creating a fun, lively atmosphere, we booked a gorgeous couple who sang and played guitar and ukulele throughout the ceremony and reception. Their music included folksy and classic numbers; fun to sing along with but not so loud that you couldn’t have a deliciously deep conversation.
All morning long, family and friends asked: “Where did you find these guys? They’re amazing!”
My grandparents being the only exception, who apparently said: “I wish all these people would stop talking so we could better hear the band!” Ha! A hit with young and old, then. – sexysobriety.com.au/blog by the beautiful bride and author of ‘A Happier Hour’, Rebecca Weller

For the rest of the arvo, we had the privilege of pumping some latin classics like Sway, Quando Quando Quando and more. We loved that music makes people happy, and how the groom’s parents came up dancing like they were barely in their teens, I am doing that big-eyed puppy eyes tears welling up look now. What a party! Nicola and team from Ultimo Catering did a beautiful job, apple juice in delightful champagne glasses and waffles are a perfect pairing for a gorgeous morning like that! A wonderful alcohol-free brunch wedding, as they’d wanted!

Some people ask why I write? Apart from having a literature background and an obsession with lovely things, I also realise everything is short-lived. Moments of our own wedding escaped us, and i’d always wished there was a way to capture everything. The archiver in me always appreciates a nice place to remember the good people we had the pleasure and honour of being with, playing for and working with.
