We sang and played cocktail jazz and hawaiian music for the media launch party, and grand opening of Perth’s first Aloha Poké joint in Perth city on our ukulele and bass combo yesterday. The media guest list was impressive, and we hope we get to say hello on The West Australian, but really what we enjoyed most was playing to happy smiling faces and tappy feet.
They were incredible. Very professional and their genre was very extensive.Well done!– client, Aloha Poké Perth
A tiki cocktail bar was set up outside the shop, pineapple garnishes, little cocktail parasols with a long, dancing queue of media guests just before sun-down. We performed the Hawaiian traditional song Aloha ʻOe (Farewell to Thee) written by Queen Liliʻuokalani’s and thought of the sight of gentle rain across the Hawaiian green, and that fond embrace given by Colonel Boyd to her as they parted from a horseback riding trip in O’ahu – the elements that gave birth to the song. The language and people are soft, gentle, bold like waves on the oceans. It was beautiful to sing, and we could see how it drew its listeners over the centuries and how it continued to do so on a night as such as we sang and played on our four-string marriage of the ukulele and bass.
We did a little research and also found out that the owners of the shop may have a little thing for jazz, so we presented our favourite vintage acoustics not limited to Sinatra and Nat Cole classics. We selected jewels from our repertoire ranging from light instrumentals to lively duets to pair with the beautiful food that was served later in the evening as the media guests chewed and chattered excitedly away.
An event as such cannot be complete without dancers! We loved the life they brought!
We also thought of our friend Namiko from Singapore and the lovely hula dancing she brought to the launch of Aloha Poké Singapore in 2015.
Congratulations Melinda and Adam to your new baby (in addition to your own little toddler!). We LOVED playing for your launch! You were excellent hosts and we know that from the thoughtful and genuine ways you had launched your little shop, that it’s the many of many new beginnings. Our own 2 wholesome Poké bowls came with generous helpings of raw tuna, cod roe, fresh fruit and salads sprinkled with their Japanese salad dressing and it was healthy and delicious! Every Poké bowl usually comes with a separate portion of rice so there’s a balance of protein and carbs all at once. Try your wasabi, spicy or just good ol’ original at St. Martin’s Centre (St. George’s Terrace, just next to Barrack Street).
Special thanks to PPES (Felix) for inviting us, Austage (Kevin Larson for being so wonderful to work with), and Aloha Poke Perth for being amazing hosts and having us.
