Never too late, right on time. That is what makes Kelli and Paul’s wedding processional song even more meaningful. We played their special song, George Michael and Aretha Franklin’s duet ‘I Knew You Were Waiting’ for their ceremony at the beautiful Matilda Bay Reserve. It was the perfect Autumn’s day by the bay for this beautiful couple and their families and friends. The breeze, the swans, the dolphins, them.
“You guys were the perfect choice.
Thank you for a wonderful night. Kelli and I both loved your professionalism and music.
You perform with such heart. Our wedding guests haven’t stopped talking about your beautiful music. Thank you for taking all my Dad’s requests, and playing my George Michael songs. xxx”
– Paul & Kelli Evans
There is no better love. But just love. The wait, the questions, the quiet longing, and perhaps, at times even the doubt of finding that someone are all very real. Polkadot + Moonbeam were just Juliet and Didi leading very separate lives at one point in our lives. Seeing Kelli and Paul look at each other, and the words they shared at the end of the evening on the patio of the lovely Catalina Room under the beautiful boughs of the evening sky, we knew they were holding something so precious in their hands, they would guard it, take care of it, love it, as they do their beautiful little one, Koko.
Every bit of their wedding was true to who they are, whom and what they cared about and for. Including the music, which as you know, we are truly ecstatic about. I understood through a little chance meeting in the ladies’ room (as we do) that the bride’s father loved the old sound – those vintage acoustics, jazz. True to their word, we then received several song requests including ‘As Time Goes By’, and performed them with the sort of appreciation that friends do for each other over a game of chess. We became huge fans of the brilliant audience, as they mouthed, sang and danced to each Sinatra, Fitzgerald or Peggy Lee classic. Their delight was our pleasure.
I loved how they had little carts, yes not 1 but 2! Carts for me, are the dreamiest of childhood fantasies. The Little Bar Cart, and La Paleta (yes! ice-cream!). Emcee Terry did a beautiful job with his ‘dirty dancing’ and somehow managed to quickly summon a little dessert train of guests queuing for their yummy treats. It was such a lively affair, we had to match those booty moves with some latin grooves, singing Sway, Quando, Quando, Quando and even bebop-ped a little bit! It was great to see everyone dancing and swinging along feeling so comfortable and relaxed.
This is one of those weddings that we played for that when we drove home together that night, our hearts were full and quietly smiling. As Moonbeam says, it’s why we do what we do. It feels so good to be able to make people happy, and then we are completely exhausted the day after with a silly gleeful look on our faces. I suspect that one of the many reasons for this was the couple’s thoughtful choices for the wedding and their guests.
Apart from the beautiful venue, Kelli and Paul also picked a few of the best in WA’s wedding industry. Sharmini Poulsen, their wedding celebrant and friend shared her beautiful blessings for the lovely couple to start of the day’s wonderful celebrations. Wedding stylist and planner Kristy (Flights of Fancy by Kristy) and her crew were an honest delight to work with. Just great people. They’d sourced from la crème de la crème including, Owl & Bear, Pompette Events, Heart Strings & Hire, Micktric Events. The Wild Stem was responsible for the amazing native flowers for the wedding. Our little infatuation with her heart for the Native Australian Flora is no secret. This lady works magic with them, but what moves me is her honest genuine love for these flowers. She knows them. Her choices for the day included Billie Buttons (Craspedia), Banksia, Protea (King Pink) … ALL my favourites. I had to resist my puppy instinct to rub my face in their softness and sweet smells.
THANK YOU, Kelli and Paul, for inviting us to play for your wedding. The pleasure is truly ours. Love to your beautiful families and friends. xx P+M
